「（略）ドイツで舞台に出るようになって、その頃も映画に出たいとずっと思っていた。えー、当時のドイツは演劇至上で、役者といえばみんな舞台出身、役者のほうも映画なんて、と見下してるかんじで、演劇が芸術界を牛耳っていた。常々僕はそんな演劇界にうんざりしてた。なんか自己陶酔しちゃっててさ。それに、そういう役者はだいたいアル中だったし。舞台がはねたらパブに直行、飲み明かしてリハーサルに直行。その頃僕は世の中を知りたかった。映画界の生活や広い世界、熱狂的な世界、その他もろもろを知りたかった。そのうち、映画主演のオファーが初めて来た。ところが劇団が出させてくれない。なにがなんでも僕はこの映画に出るよ、と言ったら劇団は、クビにしてやる、と言ってきた。国立の劇団にいたもんで、よってたかって、バカなことはやめろ、と言われた。結局僕は劇団を辞めてこの映画に出て、劇団のほうは闘争があって、解散。これまた人生で得た教訓だ。潮時を心得るべし。」

"..., and then I started um, I started in theater in Germany, and um, then I always wanted to do films. Um, like in Germany, like in that period of time, it was theater was the big thing, right so, every actor comes from theater, and um, and they tend to look at films like, pshh, like this you know, so theater was the big art. I always found it a little boring, and I found it always a little self-absorbed, you know? And so all these actors being mostly alcoholics, you know, and like go from the stage straight to the pub, and from the pub straight to rehearsal, and you know like then, I'm interested in life, and I want to see life on screen, and want to see extended life, and I want to see like, crazy forms of life, and all this kind of stuff, you know? So, and then I got my first film offered. Um, the theater didn't let me go. I said, well I'm going anyway, I'm doing this film, and they go like, so we fire you. And that was national theater company, you know, so everybody was like you're crazy, you know? So, um, so I left, I did this film, the war came down, the theater collapsed. So that was the next lesson in life, you know, you have to know when it's time to go."
